Natural Walnut

Walnut Select is our premium grade of Walnut, carefully selected for projects requiring exceptional color consistency, refined grain patterns, and a sophisticated furniture-grade appearance. Every component is chosen to highlight the natural elegance of Walnut while minimizing variations that can distract from the overall design.

Although Walnut Select provides a more uniform appearance than our Regular grade, it remains a genuine hardwood product. Subtle variations in color and grain are natural and contribute to the authenticity of every finished project.

Natural Walnut

Color Consistency

The defining characteristic of Walnut Select is its rich, uniform appearance.

Customers can expect:

  • Consistent color across doors, drawer fronts, and components
  • Minimal color variation between individual pieces
  • Carefully matched components for a cohesive finished project
  • A premium furniture-quality appearance

Walnut naturally ranges from medium brown to deep chocolate brown. While subtle tonal differences may occur, visible mismatched components are not acceptable on exposed surfaces.

Natural Grain Characteristics

Walnut Select is chosen for elegant grain patterns while minimizing pronounced natural figure.

Acceptable grain characteristics include:

  • Straight grain
  • Rift grain
  • Small burl or curly figure
  • Minimal tiger or flame figure
  • Minimal flecking
  • Smooth, balanced grain transitions

These characteristics should enhance the natural beauty of the wood without becoming the dominant visual feature.

Natural Wood Features

Mineral Streaks

Small brown and black mineral streaks may be present only in very limited amounts. These characteristics are significantly more restricted than in Walnut Regular and are evaluated to ensure they do not detract from the overall appearance.

Pin Knots

One tight pin knot, less than 1/8 inch in diameter, may be present provided it has minimal associated checking and blends naturally with the surrounding wood.

Worm Tracks and Vine Marks

Small worm tracks and vine marks may occur when they blend naturally with the surrounding grain and remain a subtle visual characteristic.

Flecking

Minimal flecking may be present but should remain subtle and not dominate the appearance of the finished component.

Burl and Curly Grain

Small areas of burl or curly figure are permitted but are carefully limited to preserve the clean, refined appearance expected of Select grade material.

Quarter-Sawn Characteristics

Quarter-sawn medullary rays are not permitted on visible face surfaces. These natural characteristics may occasionally appear on edges or non-visible surfaces but are excluded from exposed faces to maintain the premium appearance of Walnut Select.

Panel Construction

Solid wood panels are manufactured to maximize strength and long-term stability while maintaining the appearance of continuous solid wood.

Customers should expect:

  • Carefully matched grain transitions
  • Balanced grain flow throughout the panel
  • Natural variation in stave widths
  • Well-blended panel joints

Where appropriate, individual staves may be split and rejoined during manufacturing to remove natural defects while preserving a seamless furniture-quality appearance.

Sapwood

Visible sapwood is not permitted on the face of panels. Minor sapwood exposure may occasionally be visible in machined areas when it is subtle and does not significantly affect the finished appearance.

Stain Characteristics

One naturally occurring stain up to approximately 2" × 2" may be present on a standard-sized panel. Sticker stain is not permitted.

Reverse Side

The reverse side of Walnut components is considered non-show material.

Customers should expect greater natural variation in color, grain pattern, mineral streaks, and figure on back surfaces. These variations are acceptable and do not affect the structural integrity or performance of the product.

What Makes Walnut Select Different

Compared to Walnut Regular, Walnut Select is carefully chosen for:

  • Superior color consistency
  • Carefully matched components with no visible color mismatch on exposed surfaces
  • Reduced mineral streaking
  • Minimal natural figure
  • Cleaner, more uniform grain patterns
  • Limited burl and curly grain
  • Premium furniture-grade appearance

Walnut Select is an excellent choice for luxury cabinetry, fine furniture, and architectural millwork where a refined, elegant appearance is the primary design objective.

Natural Wood Disclaimer

Wood is a product of nature. Variations in color, grain pattern, mineral streaks, knots, sapwood, heartwood, and other naturally occurring characteristics are inherent to solid hardwood and are not considered manufacturing defects. No two pieces will be exactly alike, making every project uniquely beautiful.

While Meridian Products carefully grades and inspects every component to meet the standards of the selected material grade, natural variation should be expected and appreciated as part of the character and beauty of genuine wood.
