Understanding Wood Yield: A Key Factor in Cabinet Pricing
By Terry Mohler, Sales & Marketing ManagerAt Meridian Products, our commitment to “Quality Craftsmanship since 1975” is more than just a motto – it’s the foundation of everything we do. This dedication to excellence, however, comes with its own set of challenges, particularly when it comes to managing wood yield during the manufacturing process.
The Impact of Wood Yield on Cabinet Manufacturing
When we receive lumber at Meridian Products, each pallet undergoes a thorough review before being processed on our gang saw. From there, the wood is distributed throughout the plant, where it is further chopped, graded, and inspected. Not all pieces meet our stringent quality standards, and those that don’t – referred to as offal – are repurposed for other industries, such as wood pellets, animal bedding, and even heating greenhouses.
This repurposing process often involves giving away material or, in some cases, paying for its removal. The resulting waste and repurposed wood directly affect our yield percentage rates, which are crucial in determining the overall cost of our products.
How Yield Affects Pricing
Managing wood yield can present a number of challenges, particularly when it comes to pricing. While Meridian Products strives to adjust prices only once per year, fluctuating yield percentages can result in occasional cost changes. This is because the yield from each batch of wood depends on the quality and type of material selected. Even with our best efforts, there is often a gap between the cost of raw materials and the finished product.
Why Yield Matters to Installers
For cabinet installers, understanding the concept of wood yield is important because it directly impacts the cost and quality of the cabinets being installed. By recognizing the complexities of yield management, you gain a better appreciation of the craftsmanship involved in producing high-quality cabinets. Our focus on superior materials and precision manufacturing ensures that even if yields fluctuate, the finished product always meets the highest standards of quality.
The Meridian Difference
At Meridian Products, we are committed to providing top-notch quality in every cabinet we produce, even when it means navigating the complexities of wood yield. Our dedication to excellence drives us to maintain the highest standards, ensuring that our products stand the test of time, both in terms of aesthetics and durability.
