Rustic Knotty Alder
Knotty Alder is selected to celebrate the warm, rustic character that has made Alder a favorite for traditional, farmhouse, and lodge-style cabinetry. Unlike standard Alder grades that emphasize grain consistency, Knotty Alder embraces natural knots, color variation, and random grain patterns to create cabinetry with authentic handcrafted appeal.
Every door and drawer front is unique, showcasing the natural beauty and individuality of genuine Alder.
Color Characteristics
Knotty Alder is intentionally manufactured to showcase the natural variation of the species.
Customers should expect:
- Natural color variation throughout the project
- Variation between frame components and panel staves
- Warm honey, tan, and light brown tones
- A unique appearance from door to door
Unlike premium grades, color matching is not emphasized. These natural variations are an intentional part of the rustic character of Knotty Alder.
Natural Grain Characteristics
Knotty Alder embraces a wide variety of natural grain patterns.
Customers should expect:
- Straight grain
- Open grain
- Curly grain
- Random grain orientation
- Natural variation throughout the project
Panel staves are assembled in a random pattern without specific grain-matching requirements to enhance the authentic rustic appearance.
Knots & Rustic Features
Knots are the defining characteristic of Knotty Alder.
Customers should expect:
- A minimum of one knot per door or drawer front
- Knots randomly located in either the panel or frame
- Knots ranging from small pin knots up to approximately 3 inches in diameter
- Natural knot clusters
- Split knots
- Knots with natural surface cracks
Knots may be:
- Solid
- Partially open
- Naturally split
- Integrated into panel joints as split knots
Open knots will not extend completely through the material. Where necessary, minimal filler may be applied to the reverse side of cracked knots to maintain structural integrity while preserving the natural appearance of the face.
Knotty Alder is intentionally selected to provide a handcrafted, rustic look.
Customers should expect:
- Prominent natural knots
- Random grain patterns
- Natural color variation
- Organic wood character
- A unique appearance in every component
These characteristics are not defects—they define the appearance and appeal of Knotty Alder.
Panel Construction
Solid wood panels are assembled to maximize stability while preserving the rustic character of the material.
Customers should expect:
- Random grain orientation
- Natural variation in stave widths
- No grain-matching requirements
- Authentic solid wood construction
The emphasis is on showcasing the individuality of each piece rather than creating a uniform appearance.
Stain Characteristics
One naturally occurring stain up to approximately 2" × 2" may be present on a standard-sized panel. Sticker stain is not permitted.
Reverse Side
The reverse side of Knotty Alder components is considered non-show material.
Customers should expect natural variation in:
- Color
- Grain pattern
- Knot placement
- Natural wood characteristics
Where required for structural integrity, minimal filler may be visible on the reverse side of cracked knots.
What Makes Knotty Alder Unique
Knotty Alder is designed for customers seeking authentic rustic beauty. Its naturally warm color, soft texture, and abundant knots create cabinetry with timeless character and handcrafted appeal.
Unlike more uniform hardwood grades, Knotty Alder celebrates the individuality of every board. Random grain patterns, prominent knots, and natural color variation ensure that no two doors or drawer fronts are exactly alike, making every project truly one of a kind.
Note: Knotty Alder plywood and veneer products are not available.

Natural Wood Disclaimer
Wood is a product of nature. Variations in color, grain pattern, mineral streaks, knots, sapwood, heartwood, and other naturally occurring characteristics are inherent to solid hardwood and are not considered manufacturing defects. No two pieces will be exactly alike, making every project uniquely beautiful.
While Meridian Products carefully grades and inspects every component to meet the standards of the selected material grade, natural variation should be expected and appreciated as part of the character and beauty of genuine wood.
