All Species & Finishes
Red Birch

Color Characteristics

Regular Grade Red Birch is selected to provide a balanced and harmonious appearance.

Customers should expect:

  • Warm reddish-brown color tones with natural variation
  • Uniform color across panel faces and machined edges
  • Closely matched panel components
  • Slight color variation within frame components

A gradual light-to-dark transition is preferred over highly contrasting “zebra” (light-dark-light) patterns, creating a more natural and elegant appearance.

Natural Grain Characteristics

Red Birch is known for its fine texture and subtle natural figure.

Acceptable grain characteristics include:

  • Straight grain
  • Burl or curly grain
  • Minimal flame or tiger figure
  • Flecking clusters

These natural features should blend with the overall appearance of the component and enhance the beauty of the wood without becoming visually dominant.

Natural Wood Features

Marbled Color Streaks

Natural marbled color streaks are acceptable throughout the material and contribute to the distinctive appearance of Red Birch.

Mineral Streaks

Natural mineral streaks may be present in limited amounts provided they blend naturally with the surrounding wood. The acceptability of mineral streaks is based on their size, location, and overall visual effect. Slightly more prominent mineral streaking may occur on machined edges.

Pin Knots

Small clusters of pin knots are acceptable provided they blend naturally with the surrounding wood and do not distract from the overall appearance.

Worm Tracks

Small worm tracks may be present provided they blend naturally with the surrounding grain and remain a subtle visual feature. Areas containing worm tracks should not exceed approximately one-quarter of the visible component.

Burl, Curly Grain, and Flame Figure

Minimal burl, curly grain, and flame (tiger) figure are acceptable and should complement the overall appearance without becoming the dominant visual characteristic.

Panel Construction

Solid wood panels are manufactured to maximize strength, stability, and a furniture-quality appearance.

Customers should expect:

  • Carefully blended grain transitions across panel joints
  • Natural variation in stave widths
  • Well-matched panel joints
  • A consistent solid wood appearance

The majority of each panel joint is selected to create a smooth grain transition, while frame members and machined edges may display greater natural variation.

Sapwood

Small amounts of sapwood are acceptable on visible panel and frame surfaces when they blend naturally with the surrounding color. Sapwood may be more noticeable in machined areas where appearance requirements are less restrictive.

Stain Characteristics

Faint natural watermarks are acceptable provided they blend naturally with the surrounding wood and do not distract from the finished appearance. Sticker stain is not permitted.

Surface Quality

All visible surfaces are manufactured to provide a smooth, furniture-quality finish. Natural grain variation and figure are expected, but finished components should remain smooth to the touch and suitable for premium finishing applications.

Reverse Side

The reverse side of Red Birch components is considered non-show material.

Customers should expect greater natural variation in:

  • Color
  • Grain pattern
  • Mineral streaks
  • Figure
  • Sapwood
  • Other natural wood characteristics

These variations are acceptable and do not affect the structural integrity or performance of the product.

What Makes Regular Grade Red Birch Unique

Red Birch offers a distinctive combination of rich color, subtle grain, and elegant natural figure. Unlike many hardwood species, Red Birch often displays beautiful marbled color streaks and gentle flame figure that add depth and visual interest without overpowering the overall design.

Regular Grade Red Birch embraces these natural characteristics while maintaining the refined appearance and exceptional craftsmanship expected from Meridian Products. The result is cabinetry that is warm, timeless, and uniquely beautiful.

To ensure every component meets Meridian Products’ quality standards, the following conditions are not permitted:

  • Rot
  • Structural cracks
  • Open worm holes
  • Checking
  • Pick-out
  • Tear-out
  • Sticker stain
  • Manufacturing defects that affect appearance or performance
Our Quality Commitment

Every Red Birch component is carefully inspected to ensure it meets Meridian Products’ quality standards. We combine material grading with expert craftsmanship to highlight the natural beauty of Red Birch while providing the consistency expected from the selected grade.

Natural Wood Disclaimer

Wood is a product of nature. Variations in color, grain pattern, mineral streaks, knots, sapwood, heartwood, and other naturally occurring characteristics are inherent to solid hardwood and are not considered manufacturing defects. No two pieces will be exactly alike, making every project uniquely beautiful.

While Meridian Products carefully grades and inspects every component to meet the standards of the selected material grade, natural variation should be expected and appreciated as part of the character and beauty of genuine wood.
