Hard Maple
Hard Maple Regular is selected to provide the strength, durability, and clean appearance that have made hard maple one of the most popular hardwoods in the cabinetry industry. As a natural wood product, Hard Maple exhibits inherent variations in grain, color, and figure that contribute to its unique character.
Meridian Products carefully grades each component to ensure it meets our quality standards while preserving the natural beauty of genuine Hard Maple.
Hard Maple — Regular
Color Variation
Moderate color variation is an expected characteristic of Hard Maple Regular.
Customers should expect natural differences in tone ranging from creamy white to light golden brown. These variations are inherent to the species and contribute to the authentic appearance of solid hardwood.
Natural Grain Characteristics
Hard Maple Regular showcases a variety of naturally occurring grain patterns, including:
- Straight grain
- Rift grain
- Curly or burl figure (limited in size)
- Tiger or flame figure
- Quarter-sawn medullary rays
- Flecking
These grain patterns are considered desirable natural characteristics provided they do not dominate the overall appearance of the component.
Natural Wood Features
Natural mineral streaks are permitted in limited amounts. Brown mineral streaks may be more prominent than black mineral streaks but should not detract from the overall appearance of the panel.
Small pin knots and small clusters are acceptable when they blend naturally with the surrounding wood.
Small worm tracks and vine marks may be present provided they blend well with the surrounding grain and remain a minor visual feature.
Natural flecking may occur throughout the face of the panel in a scattered pattern but should not dominate the overall appearance.
Small areas of burl or curly grain are acceptable and contribute to the natural character of Hard Maple.
Panel Construction
Solid wood panels are assembled to maximize strength, stability, and appearance.
Customers should expect:
- Natural variation in stave widths
- Carefully matched grain transitions
- Well-blended panel joints
- A natural solid wood appearance
Where appropriate, staves may be split and rejoined to remove natural defects while maintaining an attractive grain flow.
Sapwood
Visible sapwood is not permitted on the face of panels. Minor sapwood exposure may occasionally be visible within machined areas when it is subtle and does not significantly affect the appearance of the finished product.
Stain Characteristics
One naturally occurring stain up to approximately 2" × 2" may be present on a standard-sized panel. Sticker stain is not permitted.
Reverse Side
The reverse side of Hard Maple components is considered non-show material.
Customers should expect greater natural variation in grain, color, mineral streaking, and figure on the back surfaces. These variations do not affect the structural integrity or performance of the product.
What Makes Hard Maple Regular Unique
Hard Maple is known for its exceptional hardness, fine texture, and excellent machining characteristics. Unlike some hardwood species, maple often displays dramatic natural mineral streaking, curly grain, and subtle figure that make every project unique.
Hard Maple Regular embraces these natural characteristics while maintaining the consistent quality and craftsmanship expected from Meridian Products.
Quality Standards
To ensure every component meets Meridian Products’ quality standards, the following conditions are not permitted:
- Rot
- Structural cracks
- Open worm holes
- Checking
- Pick-out
- Tear-out
Hard Maple — Select
Overview
Hard Maple Select is our premium grade of hard maple, chosen for projects where a clean, consistent appearance is the highest priority. Material is carefully selected for superior color uniformity, refined grain patterns, and minimal natural characteristics while preserving the strength and durability that make Hard Maple one of the industry’s most desirable hardwoods.
As with all genuine hardwood, every component remains unique and will display subtle natural variations that enhance the beauty of the finished product.
Color Consistency
The defining feature of Hard Maple Select is its consistent appearance.
Customers can expect:
- Uniform color throughout doors, drawer fronts, and components
- Minimal color variation between individual pieces
- A clean, furniture-grade appearance
- Carefully selected material that creates a cohesive finished project
Because Hard Maple is a natural product, slight tonal differences may still occur and are considered normal.
Natural Grain Characteristics
Hard Maple Select is chosen for attractive grain while minimizing pronounced figure.
Acceptable grain patterns include:
- Straight grain
- Rift grain
- Small burl or curly grain figure
- Minimal tiger or flame figure
- Minimal flecking
- Clean, consistent grain transitions
Natural grain should enhance the appearance without becoming the dominant visual feature.
Natural Wood Features
Small mineral streaks may be present in limited quantities. These are significantly more restricted than in Hard Maple Regular and are carefully evaluated to ensure they do not detract from the finished appearance.
One tight pin knot, less than 1/8 inch in diameter, may be present provided it has minimal associated checking and blends naturally with the surrounding wood.
Small worm tracks or vine marks may occur when they blend naturally with the surrounding grain and remain a minor visual characteristic.
Small areas of burl or curly figure are permitted but are limited in size to preserve the overall uniform appearance expected of Select grade material.
Minimal flecking may be present but should not dominate the appearance of the finished component.
Quarter-sawn medullary rays are not permitted on visible face surfaces. They may occasionally appear on edges or non-visible surfaces where they do not affect the overall appearance.
Panel Construction
Solid wood panels are manufactured for long-term stability while maintaining the appearance of continuous solid wood.
Customers should expect:
- Carefully matched grain transitions
- Natural variation in stave widths
- Well-blended panel joints
- Consistent grain flow across the panel
Where appropriate, individual staves may be split and rejoined to remove natural defects while maintaining an attractive, furniture-quality appearance.
Sapwood
Visible sapwood is not permitted on the face of panels. Minor sapwood exposure may occasionally be visible in machined areas when it is subtle and does not significantly affect the appearance of the finished product.
Stain Characteristics
One naturally occurring stain up to approximately 2" × 2" may be present on a standard-sized panel. Sticker stain is not permitted.
Reverse Side
The reverse side of components is considered non-show material.
Natural variations in color, grain, mineral streaking, and figure may be more noticeable on back surfaces and do not affect the quality or performance of the product.

Natural Wood Disclaimer
Wood is a product of nature. Variations in color, grain pattern, mineral streaks, knots, sapwood, heartwood, and other naturally occurring characteristics are inherent to solid hardwood and are not considered manufacturing defects. No two pieces will be exactly alike, making every project uniquely beautiful.
While Meridian Products carefully grades and inspects every component to meet the standards of the selected material grade, natural variation should be expected and appreciated as part of the character and beauty of genuine wood.
