Soft Maple
Soft Maple Regular offers the clean appearance of maple with a softer, more subtle grain pattern than Hard Maple. It is an excellent choice for painted and stained cabinetry, providing outstanding workability and a smooth, consistent finish while preserving the natural beauty of genuine hardwood.
Meridian Products carefully grades every Soft Maple component to balance natural character with consistent quality, allowing the unique features of the species to complement the finished product.
Soft Maple — Regular
Color Variation
Moderate color variation is an expected characteristic of Soft Maple Regular.
Customers should expect natural differences in color ranging from creamy white to light tan and pale brown. These variations are inherent to the species and contribute to the authentic appearance of solid hardwood.
Natural Grain Characteristics
Soft Maple is known for its fine, even texture and subtle grain pattern.
Acceptable grain characteristics include:
- Straight grain
- Rift grain
- Burl or curly figure (limited in size)
- Tiger or flame figure
- Quarter-sawn medullary rays
- Flecking
These natural characteristics are acceptable provided they complement the overall appearance and do not dominate the finished component.
Natural Wood Features
Natural mineral streaks may be present in limited amounts. Brown mineral streaks may be more noticeable than black mineral streaks but should not dominate the appearance of the panel.
Small pin knots and knot clusters are acceptable when they blend naturally with the surrounding wood and remain a minor visual feature.
Small worm tracks and vine marks may occur provided they blend naturally with the surrounding grain and do not dominate the appearance of the component.
Natural flecking may appear in scattered areas throughout the panel but should remain subtle and balanced.
Small areas of burl or curly figure are acceptable and contribute to the natural beauty and uniqueness of Soft Maple.
Panel Construction
Solid wood panels are manufactured to maximize strength and long-term stability while maintaining the appearance of continuous solid wood.
Customers should expect:
- Natural variation in stave widths
- Carefully matched grain transitions
- Well-blended panel joints
- A consistent solid wood appearance
Where appropriate, individual staves may be split and rejoined to remove natural defects while maintaining attractive grain flow.
Sapwood
Visible sapwood is not permitted on the face of panels. Minor sapwood exposure may occasionally be visible in machined areas when it is subtle and does not significantly affect the finished appearance.
Stain Characteristics
One naturally occurring stain up to approximately 2" × 2" may be present on a standard-sized panel. Sticker stain is not permitted.
Surface Quality
Because Soft Maple has a finer grain structure, occasional rough grain may occur in profiled areas or along machined edges. Meridian Products sands these areas as smooth as possible during manufacturing to minimize raised or "hairy" grain while preserving crisp profile details.
Reverse Side
The reverse side of Soft Maple components is considered non-show material.
Customers should expect greater natural variation in color, grain pattern, mineral streaks, and natural figure on back surfaces. These variations are acceptable and do not affect the structural integrity or performance of the product.
What Makes Soft Maple Regular Unique
Soft Maple is prized for its smooth texture, excellent machining characteristics, and versatility. Compared to Hard Maple, it generally exhibits a finer, more uniform grain, making it an outstanding choice for both painted and stained cabinetry.
Soft Maple Regular embraces the natural beauty of the species while maintaining the quality, consistency, and craftsmanship expected from Meridian Products.
Quality Standards
To ensure every component meets Meridian Products’ quality standards, the following conditions are not permitted:
- Rot
- Structural cracks
- Open worm holes
- Checking
- Pick-out
- Tear-out
Soft Maple — Select
Overview
Soft Maple Select is our premium grade of Soft Maple, carefully selected for projects where a refined, consistent appearance is the highest priority. Material is chosen for superior color uniformity, clean grain patterns, and minimal natural characteristics while maintaining the smooth texture and excellent finishing qualities that make Soft Maple a preferred choice for fine cabinetry and furniture.
Although Soft Maple Select offers a more uniform appearance than our Regular grade, it remains a natural hardwood. Subtle variations in color and grain are expected and enhance the authenticity of the finished product.
Color Consistency
The defining characteristic of Soft Maple Select is its consistent appearance.
Customers can expect:
- Uniform color across doors, drawer fronts, and components
- Minimal color variation between individual pieces
- A clean, furniture-grade appearance
- Carefully selected material for a cohesive finished project
Slight natural tonal differences may still occur and are considered a normal characteristic of genuine Soft Maple.
Natural Grain Characteristics
Soft Maple Select is chosen for attractive grain while minimizing pronounced natural figure.
Acceptable grain characteristics include:
- Straight grain
- Rift grain
- Small burl or curly grain figure
- Minimal tiger or flame figure
- Minimal flecking
- Clean, well-balanced grain transitions
These features enhance the appearance of the wood without becoming the dominant visual element.
Natural Wood Features
Small brown and black mineral streaks may be present in very limited quantities. These characteristics are significantly more restricted than in Soft Maple Regular and are evaluated to ensure they do not detract from the overall appearance.
One tight pin knot, less than 1/8 inch in diameter, may be present provided it has minimal associated checking and blends naturally with the surrounding wood.
Small worm tracks and vine marks may occur when they blend naturally with the surrounding grain and remain a subtle visual characteristic.
Minimal flecking may be present but should not dominate the appearance of the finished component.
Small areas of burl or curly figure are permitted but are carefully limited to preserve the clean, consistent appearance expected of Select grade material.

Natural Wood Disclaimer
Wood is a product of nature. Variations in color, grain pattern, mineral streaks, knots, sapwood, heartwood, and other naturally occurring characteristics are inherent to solid hardwood and are not considered manufacturing defects. No two pieces will be exactly alike, making every project uniquely beautiful.
While Meridian Products carefully grades and inspects every component to meet the standards of the selected material grade, natural variation should be expected and appreciated as part of the character and beauty of genuine wood.
