Red Oak
Red Oak Regular is valued for its strength, distinctive open grain, and timeless appearance. As one of the most recognizable hardwood species used in cabinetry and furniture, Red Oak offers exceptional durability while showcasing the natural grain patterns and color variations unique to solid wood.
Meridian Products carefully grades every Red Oak component to balance natural character with consistent quality, allowing the beauty of genuine hardwood to remain the focal point of every project.
Red Oak — Regular
Color Variation
Moderate color variation is an expected characteristic of Red Oak Regular.
Customers should expect natural differences ranging from light tan to warm reddish-brown tones. These variations are inherent to the species and help create the authentic appearance of solid Red Oak cabinetry.
Natural Grain Characteristics
Red Oak is well known for its bold, open grain pattern and natural figure.
Acceptable grain characteristics include:
- Straight grain
- Rift grain
- Burl or curly figure (limited in size)
- Tiger or flame figure
- Quarter-sawn medullary rays
- Flecking
These characteristics are considered desirable features of Red Oak, provided they do not dominate the overall appearance of the finished component.
Natural Wood Features
Natural mineral streaks may be present in limited amounts and are considered part of the species' natural character.
Small pin knots and clusters are acceptable when they blend naturally with the surrounding wood and do not become a dominant feature.
Small worm tracks and vine marks may occur provided they blend naturally with the surrounding grain and remain a subtle visual characteristic.
Natural flecking may appear randomly throughout the face of the panel but should not dominate the overall appearance.
Small areas of burl or curly grain are acceptable and contribute to the natural beauty and uniqueness of Red Oak.
Quarter-sawn medullary rays are a naturally occurring feature of Red Oak and may appear on the face of panels in limited amounts. These rays should not exceed approximately one-third of the visible face and contribute to the distinctive appearance associated with quarter-sawn Red Oak.
Panel Construction
Solid wood panels are manufactured for long-term stability while maintaining the appearance of continuous solid wood.
Customers should expect:
- Natural variation in stave widths
- Carefully blended grain transitions
- Well-matched panel joints
- An authentic solid wood appearance
Individual staves may be split and rejoined during manufacturing to remove natural defects while maintaining an attractive and consistent grain flow.
Sapwood
Visible sapwood is not permitted on the face of panels. Minor sapwood exposure may occasionally be visible within machined areas when it is subtle and does not significantly affect the finished appearance.
Stain Characteristics
One naturally occurring stain up to approximately 2" × 2" may be present on a standard-sized panel. Sticker stain is not permitted.
Reverse Side
The reverse side of Red Oak components is considered non-show material.
Customers should expect greater natural variation in color, grain pattern, and natural characteristics on back surfaces. These variations are acceptable and do not affect the structural integrity or performance of the product.
What Makes Red Oak Regular Unique
Red Oak is admired for its bold grain pattern, excellent strength, and classic appearance. Its naturally open grain and pronounced texture create warmth and visual depth that have made it a favorite for cabinetry, furniture, and architectural millwork for generations.
Red Oak Regular embraces these natural characteristics while maintaining the consistent craftsmanship and quality expected from Meridian Products.
Quality Standards
To ensure every component meets Meridian Products’ quality standards, the following conditions are not permitted:
- Rot
- Structural cracks
- Open worm holes
- Checking
- Pick-out
- Tear-out
Red Oak — Select
Overview
Red Oak Select is our premium grade of Red Oak, carefully chosen for projects requiring a refined, consistent appearance while preserving the distinctive grain and character that make Red Oak one of the most popular hardwoods in the cabinetry industry.
Each component is selected for superior color consistency, minimal natural characteristics, and an overall furniture-grade appearance. While Red Oak Select offers a cleaner aesthetic than our Regular grade, it remains a natural wood product, and subtle variations should be expected.
Color Consistency
The defining characteristic of Red Oak Select is its uniform appearance.
Customers can expect:
- Consistent color across doors, drawer fronts, and components
- Minimal color variation between individual pieces
- A balanced, furniture-quality appearance
- Carefully selected material that creates a cohesive finished project
Slight natural tonal differences may still occur and are considered a normal characteristic of genuine Red Oak.
Natural Grain Characteristics
Red Oak Select is selected for attractive grain patterns while minimizing pronounced natural figure.
Acceptable grain characteristics include:
- Straight grain
- Rift grain
- Small burl or curly grain figure
- Minimal tiger or flame figure
- Subtle flecking
- Clean, well-balanced grain transitions
These features should complement the overall appearance without becoming the dominant visual element.
Natural Wood Features
Brown mineral streaks may be present in minimal amounts. Black mineral streaks are not permitted on visible surfaces.
One tight pin knot, less than 1/8 inch in diameter, may be present provided it has minimal associated checking and blends naturally with the surrounding wood.
Small worm tracks and vine marks may occur when they blend naturally with the surrounding grain and remain a minor visual characteristic.
Natural flecking may appear in scattered amounts but should remain subtle and not dominate the appearance of the finished component.
Small areas of burl or curly grain are permitted but are limited to preserve the clean, consistent appearance expected of Select grade material.
Quarter-sawn medullary rays are not permitted on visible face surfaces. These natural characteristics may occasionally appear on non-visible surfaces but are excluded from the face to maintain the refined appearance of Red Oak Select.

Natural Wood Disclaimer
Wood is a product of nature. Variations in color, grain pattern, mineral streaks, knots, sapwood, heartwood, and other naturally occurring characteristics are inherent to solid hardwood and are not considered manufacturing defects. No two pieces will be exactly alike, making every project uniquely beautiful.
While Meridian Products carefully grades and inspects every component to meet the standards of the selected material grade, natural variation should be expected and appreciated as part of the character and beauty of genuine wood.
