Knotty Pine
Regular Grade Knotty Pine is selected to showcase the rustic charm and natural warmth that have made Pine a timeless choice for cabins, cottages, farmhouse designs, and traditional interiors. This grade embraces the natural knots, color variation, and character unique to Pine while maintaining the structural integrity and craftsmanship expected from Meridian Products.
Every door and panel is unique, reflecting the authentic beauty of solid Knotty Pine.
Color Characteristics
Regular Grade Knotty Pine is intended to display the natural color variation of the species.
Customers should expect:
- A rustic blend of light sapwood and darker heartwood
- Natural variation in color throughout the project
- Light components matched with lighter wood and darker components matched with darker wood where practical
- Warm, authentic Pine character from door to door
Color matching is performed to create a natural rustic appearance rather than a uniform furniture-grade appearance.
Natural Grain Characteristics
Knotty Pine is known for its distinctive grain and rustic appeal.
Acceptable grain characteristics include:
- Straight grain
- Rift grain
- Burl or curly figure
Grain transitions are selected so the majority of each panel joint blends naturally, while more pronounced grain changes may occur on frame members and machined edges.
Natural Wood Features
Natural mineral streaks are acceptable provided they do not dominate the overall appearance. Slightly more prominent mineral streaking may occur on machined edges.
Pin knots are acceptable and contribute to the authentic rustic appearance of the material.
Small worm tracks may occur in limited amounts on visible panel surfaces and are considered part of the natural character of the wood.
Natural burl and curly grain are acceptable provided they complement the overall appearance and do not become visually distracting.
Small sap pockets up to approximately 3/8 inch in diameter are acceptable and are considered a normal characteristic of genuine Pine.
Knots & Rustic Features
Knots are a defining characteristic of Regular Grade Knotty Pine.
Customers should expect:
- Sound, closed knots throughout the project
- Whole or partial knots
- Split knots
- Pin knots
- Knots incorporated into glued panel staves
To preserve the rustic appearance while maintaining structural integrity:
- Loose knots are not permitted.
- Knots with missing sections on machined edges are not permitted.
- Split knots are acceptable and do not require filling.
- If a split knot creates a visible opening through the material, it may be filled from the back so the repair is not noticeable from the face.
- Partial knots occurring along glued stave joints are considered a natural characteristic of the material.
Panel Construction
Solid wood panels are manufactured to maximize stability while preserving the natural appearance of the material.
Customers should expect:
- Natural variation in stave widths
- Carefully blended grain transitions across most panel joints
- Authentic solid wood construction
- Natural rustic character throughout each component
Stain Characteristics
Naturally occurring wood stain is not permitted on visible face surfaces. Light cocoa stain may be present on the reverse side of components.
Surface Quality
Finished components are manufactured to provide a smooth, high-quality surface suitable for finishing. While knots, grain variation, and natural character are expected, the finished surface should remain smooth to the touch.
Reverse Side
The reverse side of Knotty Pine components is considered non-show material.
Customers should expect greater natural variation in:
- Color
- Grain pattern
- Knots
- Mineral streaks
- Light cocoa stain
- Other natural wood characteristics
These variations are acceptable and do not affect the structural integrity or performance of the product.

Natural Wood Disclaimer
Wood is a product of nature. Variations in color, grain pattern, mineral streaks, knots, sapwood, heartwood, and other naturally occurring characteristics are inherent to solid hardwood and are not considered manufacturing defects. No two pieces will be exactly alike, making every project uniquely beautiful.
While Meridian Products carefully grades and inspects every component to meet the standards of the selected material grade, natural variation should be expected and appreciated as part of the character and beauty of genuine wood.
